After discovering the Spirit of the Highlands at The Inverness Castle Experience, take a 5 minute stroll down to the Inverness Museum and Art Gallery to discover even more stories connected to this landmark building.

Throughout 2026, a selection of archives and souvenirs featuring images of the iconic Inverness Castle will be on display within the first floor museum gallery, celebrating its new chapter as a visitor attraction. The display explores the Castle’s rich history and the important role it has played in the tourism story of Inverness and the Highlands, long before it opened to visitors as the Inverness Castle Experience.

Highlights

  • Discover historic guidebooks, postcards and artistic interpretations of Inverness Castle.

  • Explore the evolution of the Castle site, from its earliest recorded beginnings in the 11th century to the landmark building seen today.

  • Learn about the development of the south tower courthouse in 1836 and the north tower prison block completed in 1848.

  • Find out how the Castle transformed from a courthouse and prison into the Inverness Castle Experience, which opened in December 2025.

  • See how the Castle has become an enduring symbol of Inverness and the Highlands skyline.
