Stories from Castle Hill: William Fraser Tytler

Fri 15 Jan 2027

11:30–12:30

Location · North Tower Bar, The Inverness Castle Experience Price · £11

Join Highland Archive Service Community Engagement Officer Lorna Steele-McGinn for an illustrated history talk exploring the life of William Fraser Tytler and the events, both everyday and extraordinary, that helped shape the story and image of Inverness and the wider Highlands.

Writer, historian, lecturer, lawyer and sheriff, William Fraser Tytler led a remarkable and complex life. His travels took him across the Highlands, where he intervened in famine-stricken communities and played a significant role in the development of the region. He inherited enslaved people on a Jamaican plantation and later instigated the construction of the present-day Inverness Castle in the 1830s and 1840s, helping to create one of the city's most recognisable landmarks and leaving a legacy that continues to shape Inverness today.

Tea, coffee and a scone are included.

Please note: Your event ticket does not include access to the main Experience.
